New Delhi: India has been placed in the 67th position in the global hunger index, far below than the neighbouring countries like Pakistan and China. China has been ranked at 9th place and Pakistan is on 52nd place.
International Food Policy Research Institute conducted the global hunger index among 84 countries. The countries were marked on the basis of three leading indicators- prevalence of child malnutrition, rate of child mortality, and the proportion of people who are calorie deficient.
Though the index for hunger in the world index for hunger in the world; there has been an improvement index as compared to the index in 1990, the index has witnessed a fall from 19.8 points to 15.1.
High level of child underweight resulting from the low nutritional and social status of women in the country is the reason for India being placed at such a low place. The report pointed out that India alone accounts for a large share of the world's undernourished children.
"The economic performance and hunger levels are inversely correlated. In South and Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Timor-Leste are among countries with hunger levels considerably higher than their gross national income (GNI) per capita," the IFPRI report said.
India has a lot of drawbacks which hinders its progress. Most important of them being- persistent inequalities in the society on various basis, ineffective delivery of public services, weak accountability systems and gaps in the implementation of policies.
The 2015 deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) seems to be impossible with the country failing to work upon majority of the targets related to poverty, hunger, health, gender equality and environmental sustainability.
The targets can only be met only and only if the effort made by government are carried out and implemented by both the government and the local people.
